One Drain, or the Main Line?

This is the only question that matters before you call, and you can answer it yourself in about two minutes.

One drain

Only a single fixture is slow or blocked. Everything else drains normally. The clog is in that trap or its branch line — annoying, contained, and usually a single visit.

The main line

Two or more fixtures back up together. Flushing the toilet makes the shower gurgle or fills the tub. The lowest drain in the house is the one overflowing. Stop using water in the house and call — this one escalates into sewage on your floor.

What we clear

Every Line in the House

Kitchen lines

The hardest-working drain in any house and the one most likely to grease up. Long runs to the stack are the usual culprit.

Bath & shower

Hair and soap at the trap, or scale build-up further down. Tucson’s hard water makes the second one common.

Toilets & floor drains

Cleared without pulling the toilet where possible; pulled and re-set with a fresh wax ring where it is not.

Laundry standpipes

Lint and detergent scale. Usually shows up as the washer overflowing the standpipe mid-cycle.

Main sewer line

Cleared from the cleanout, then cameraed so you can see whether it was grease, roots, scale or a broken section.

Outside & yard drains

Patio and area drains that silt up and then back into the house during monsoon downpours.

The two methods

Cable or Jet — and Why It Matters

Cable machine

Punches a hole through the blockage and gets flow back fast. Right for most single-fixture clogs and for a first-time main line stoppage. Cheaper, quicker, and often all that is needed.

Hydro-jetting

High-pressure water that scours the full inside diameter of the pipe. The answer for years of grease in a kitchen run, heavy mineral scale, or roots that keep coming back. Cabling reopens the hole; jetting cleans the pipe.

We will tell you which one your line actually needs, including when the cheaper one is enough.

Why it keeps happening

Repeat Clogs Are a Symptom

If the same drain blocks twice in a year, something structural is causing it. In Tucson it is almost always one of these five.

Grease

Cools and hardens on the pipe wall down the length of a long kitchen run. Builds a narrower and narrower channel until it closes.

Hard water scale

Tucson water is hard. In older galvanised pipe the mineral layer builds inward year after year until the bore is a fraction of what it was.

Root intrusion

Mesquite, palo verde and oleander find joints in older clay and cast iron lines and grow straight into them.

A bellied section

Ground movement has taken the fall out of part of the line, so solids settle there instead of flowing through.

A broken pipe

Cracked or collapsed. Debris enters, flow leaves. The camera is the only way to know before you are digging.

Wrong things flushed

“Flushable” wipes are not. Neither are paper towels, cat litter or cooking fat.

Questions

Drain Cleaning — FAQs

How do I know if it is one drain or the main line?

Run the test yourself in two minutes. If only one fixture is slow, it is a local clog in that trap or branch. If two or more back up together, if flushing the toilet makes the shower gurgle or fills the tub, or if the lowest drain in the house is the one overflowing, the main line is blocked. A main line blockage is urgent — stop using water in the house until it is cleared.

Should I use a chemical drain cleaner first?

We would rather you did not. Caustic cleaners often fail to clear a real blockage, they sit in the trap, and they make the job hazardous for whoever opens that line afterwards. On older galvanised or cast iron they can also accelerate corrosion of the pipe you are trying to save. If you have already poured some in, just tell us when we arrive so we can handle it safely.

What is the difference between cabling and hydro-jetting?

A cable machine punches through the blockage and restores flow — fast, effective, and the right call for most single clogs. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the full inside diameter of the pipe, which is what you want for years of accumulated grease, heavy scale, or recurring root intrusion. Cabling reopens the hole; jetting cleans the pipe.

Why does my drain keep clogging in the same place?

Because something structural is causing it. Common Tucson causes are grease build-up in a long kitchen run, mineral scale from hard water narrowing older galvanised pipe, roots entering at a joint, a section that has bellied or lost its fall, or a broken pipe. That is exactly why we camera the line after clearing it — repeat clogs are a symptom, not the problem.

Do you camera the line?

On main line work, yes — after it is flowing again, so you can see what caused it and what condition the pipe is in. On a single fixture clog it is usually unnecessary, and we will say so rather than add it to the invoice.

How much does drain cleaning cost in Tucson?

It depends on which line, how accessible the cleanout is, and whether cabling is enough or the line needs jetting. We give you the price before we start. If the camera then shows a broken or root-damaged section, that is a separate quote and a separate decision — we will not fold it into the invoice without asking you.
